Step 5: Ask the recipients questions about the items on the list.
Ask the recipients these questions about each item (except cash) that you plan to distribute: (1) Do you believe that you have a special claim to this item? For example, has it been promised to you? (2) If you received this item, would you want to sell it or keep it?
The answers to question (2) should not be revealed to any of the recipients.
Hint:
If whoever's in charge is also a recipient, then have two questionnaires: one for question (1) and another for question (2). Allow whoever's in charge to collect the answers to question (1), but have a neutral record-keeper collect those to question (2) and keep them confidential. That will prevent bidders from learning too much about what others might bid.
Example: Each of the three Snider children were given the following questionnaire:
